So now that i’ve made it to school, I am regrettably falling into the trap of judging first year students simply because I am in second year. However, in some cases, this feeling seems to be perfectly justified. During my Friday 10:30 class, I had comfortably taken my seat in the back of Dunning Auditorium, when a frantic first year ran in and sat next to me. He said to the person sitting next to him on the other side, “Wow, Vic Hall (largest residence, closest to Dunning) is so far away! I thought I wasn’t going to make it in time!” Granted, Queen’s these days is pretty-well construction ridden, certain detours need to be made and most direct routes from place to place are not possible. But after I had taken a 15 minute walk from my off-campus house to Dunning, hearing this complaint of what could not be more than a 5 minute walk (including detours), I was taken aback. If he chooses to move off campus at all during his university stay, he’s going to have more to complain about. Just you wait, Henry Higgins.
Side note: There are certain phrases that are hard to say without filling in the rest with some certain line from a movie, or a song, etc. For example, “Just you wait, (Henry Higgins)”, is from My Fair Lady. Two others are “Come together! (right now, over me)”, and of course, the classic “What would you do? (if your son was at home, crying all along on the bedroom floor cause he’s hungry, and the only way to feed him is to sleep with a man for a little bit of money and his daddy’s gone, somewhere smokin’ rock now, in and out of lock down, I ain’t got a job now, so for you this is just a good time but for me this is what I call life, uh).”
Well, time to return to my various readings, none of which include French (had to be dropped due to conflicts), which I sorrily try make up for by listening to Edith Piaf and subscribing to French news podcasts.
Au revoir!
